Gwili Steam Railway
The Gwili Railway has the potential to be the number one tourist attraction in Carmarthenshire. The vision for the future is to provide entertainment for its customers combining this with a ride on a heritage steam train through beautiful Welsh countryside.
The initial plan is to upgrade and develop the existing line and the facilities that the railway can offer. Car parking is to be improved together with better catering facilities at Bronwydd Arms Station and Llwyfan Cerrig Station. Interesting visitor attractions for both adults and children are to be introduced to Llwyfan Cerrig Station adding to what is already provided.
The existing line is just under 2.5 miles long and it is intended to initially extend this south towards Carmarthen to the site of the former Abergwili Junction. Here it is intended to build a station and a state of the art visitors' centre. The visitors' centre will include facilities that will be an asset to the community and will provide covered areas for children to play and for museum displays. Other all year round facilities such as a Coffee Shop/Cafe will also be built. Access to the railway will be from the Carmarthen by pass; a new large car park will accommodate many cars and several coaches. The running line will then be 4.0 miles long, providing an interesting, longer ride for our customers and will pass over two level crossings.
Ultimately, the railway will be extended north along the beautiful valley of the Afon Gwili towards Conwil where the roads are left behind. From this point the river and the railway share the valley with creatures of the wild and farm animals as eventually Llanpumpsaint is reached.
