The Journey

The Gwili Railway line is currently 4 miles between the end of the line at Abergwili Junction and the end of the line at Danycoed Halt. Trains depart from Bronwydd Arms Station to Danycoed Halt then back down to Abergwili Junction and then returning to Bronwydd Arms.

The round trip is 8 miles and takes just over one hour though, presently we are not able to allow passengers to stay all day with our rover ticket. This will be revised in 2021 once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Please note: There is no public access from the Abergwili Junction, Llwyfan Cerrig and Danycoed Halt platforms. All train rides depart/arrive from Bronwydd Arms Station.

Before you travel to the railway please visit the website or Facebook page to check for service changes. Please call 01267 238213 no later than 4.00pm the day before you travel.

The Gwili Railway can accept no liability for failure to operate advertised services or attractions. A Diesel locomotive may have to be substituted for steam locomotive at short notice for operational reasons. Information correct at time of going to print.

When you have purchased your ticket online or via phone from the Booking Office please follow these temporary guidelines:

Having arrived at Bronwydd Arms Station please stay in your car until we advise you to board the train. Then you can then join the train for your trip to Danycoed Halt. A gentle climb out of Bronwydd village, takes you through the open fields and wooded hills, hugging the River Gwili all the while. You are never far from water on this line! Keep an eye out for the herons, which frequent this valley, dipping for fish in the river.

The train climbs once again as it leaves Pentre Morgan and its old mill, now converted into a home. Here iron was smelted, to be taken to Carmarthen for dispatch by ship from the Quay. The train now crosses the river with its weir, and enters Llwyfan Cerrig Station. This is the home of the Miniature Railway the Travelling Post Office (TPO) and the picnic site down by the river.

Leaving Llwyfan Cerrig, the train hugs the river, for 3/4 of a mile, along the extension, opened in 2001, before entering Danycoed Halt. This halt resembles those built by the GWR on their country lines. Alight and look around. Walk to the end of the platform and view the next obstacle in the progress to go north. The Gwili Railway owns the track bed for a further 3 miles from this point. Watch the engine run around its train as it prepares to return to Llwyfan Cerrig. At Llwyfan Cerrig there will be a short toilet stopover. When the weather is fine, stay a while and relax alongside the weir, enjoy a picnic or explore the site in greater depth.

Llwyfan Cerrig was opened in 1988 and is built on the site of an old loading platform for stone which came from the quarry across the river and the one which forms an impressive backdrop to the station today. The station building came from Felin Fach on the Aberaeron line and was taken down plank by plank by the volunteers and then rebuilt on this site. Imagine buying a return ticket to Aberystwyth, Newcastle Emlyn, Tregaron, Strata Florida, Carmarthen or Bronwydd Arms!

Re-board the train for the return to Abergwili Junction and Bronwydd Arms and on arrival, visit the Museum, well stocked shop in the Station Building and also the Signal Box. The Station building was originally a signal box from Llandovery and the Signal Box came from Llandybie. Both were dismantled and brought to this site, to be rebuilt by our volunteers. Stand by the signal box and look across the road through the crossing gates, the line going away from you is the start of the Carmarthen North extension. Finally round off your visit by visiting the 'Gwili Tea Room' in the Station yard, where you can get a range of snacks, tea, coffee and cold drinks.
