Two Ways to Travel!

Our trains feature two types of ticket, covering different seating spaces on-board.

Exclusive Vintage Compartments

Our compartment seats are a brilliant, heritage way to travel – particularly for larger groups (up to six people). You will travel in a 1950s-style compartment of your own with a large picture window and plenty of space to enjoy your trip with loved ones.

Open Seating Tickets

If you’d like a more flexible option that allows particularly for small party sizes (such as couples), you may want to travel in open seating. You will be able to choose your seat when you arrive and settle in for a relaxing train trip!

By Public Transport

Via Train / Bus

Regular trains are operated to Carmarthen from Cardiff, Swansea, Tenby, and Haverfordwest by Transport for Wales.

Please note that our Abergwili Junction station is currently only accessible by road so anyone joining us by public transport will need to use a taxi from central Carmarthen. We are actively working on developing and improving this.

In addition to offering special rates to coach parties, we also provide the driver with a free meal and drink, as well as a free ticket for the railway.

The Journey

The Gwili Railway line is currently 4 miles between one end of the line at Abergwili Junction and the other end of the line at Danycoed Halt. Trains depart from Abergwili Junction station to Danycoed Halt then return.

Please note: In 2023 and future years, our trains depart from and return to our new station at Abergwili Junction (SA31 2DG) in Carmarthen. Our Bronwydd Arms station is no longer our primary joining point.

Having arrived at Abergwili Junction, please leave your car and head to our visitor welcome point. Then you can join the train for your trip to Danycoed Halt.

Enjoy a trip alongside the river from Abergwili Junction towards our middle station at Bronwydd Arms, now restored to its former role as a pretty country station.

A gentle climb out of Bronwydd village, takes you through the open fields and wooded hills, hugging the River Gwili all the while. You are never far from water on this line! Keep an eye out for the herons, which frequent this valley, dipping for fish in the river.

The train climbs once again as it leaves Pentre Morgan and its old mill, now converted into a home. Here iron was smelted, to be taken to Carmarthen for dispatch by ship from the Quay. The train now crosses the river with its weir, and enters Llwyfan Cerrig Station. This is the home of the Miniature Railway, the Travelling Post Office (TPO) and the picnic site down by the river.

Leaving Llwyfan Cerrig, the train hugs the river, for 3/4 of a mile, along the extension, opened in 2001, before entering Danycoed Halt. This halt resembles those built by the GWR on their country lines. Alight and look around. Walk to the end of the platform and view the next obstacle in the progress to go north. The Gwili Railway owns the track bed for a further 3 miles from this point. Watch the engine run around its train as it prepares to return to Llwyfan Cerrig.

At Llwyfan Cerrig there will be a short toilet stopover. When the weather is fine, stay a while and relax alongside the weir, enjoy a picnic or explore the site in greater depth.

Llwyfan Cerrig was opened in 1988 and is built on the site of an old loading platform for stone which came from the quarry across the river and the one which forms an impressive backdrop to the station today. The station building came from Felin Fach on the Aberaeron line and was taken down plank by plank by the volunteers and then rebuilt on this site. Imagine buying a return ticket to Aberystwyth, Newcastle Emlyn, Tregaron, Strata Florida, Carmarthen or Bronwydd Arms.

From Llywfan Cerrig, you will return through Bronwydd Arms to Abergwili Junction. A complete journey takes 90 minutes approximately.
